Couponing 101 Where to find these coupons!

“Where can I find coupons?” We get this question a lot from people looking for more ways they can increase their savings. There are many places to be on the lookout for extra coupons! They come from a variety of sources – many of them are FREE.

Types of Coupons and Where to Look for Them:
Manufacturer Coupon: Manufacturer coupons are issued by manufacturers as an advertisement to entice you to buy their products. The most common place to find a mfg. coupon is in the Sunday coupon inserts. SmartSource, RedPlum and P&G will each have inserts in the Sunday paper throughout the month. New subscribers can sometimes sign up for a discount newspaper subscription
.
Catalinas: Catalina coupons are named after Catalina Marketing who brought us the little box that the coupons print out from. Catalinas are coupons that print out at the register that are usually handed to you with your receipt. These coupons can be either store coupons or manufacturer coupons (it depends on the store promotions).

Store Coupons: These coupons are issued by the store you are shopping at and meant to be used at that specific store. These store coupons are issued in an attempt to get  you to their store. Many times store coupons can be stacked with a mfg. coupon for additional coupons so be sure to check the coupon policy at your stores.

Another great tip to remember is some stores will actually accept “Competitor Coupons” in an effort to “snag” your business away from their competitors. These store coupons that are issued at one store would actually be redeemable at another store that accepts their competitor coupons.

Blinkies: These coupons can be found in the little black boxes hanging on the shelf in front of the product .They can be found in many grocery and retail stores. Be on the lookout as you head up and down the aisles – this is a good way to keep kids busy while you shop too (have them on the “lookout”). These are usually a mfg. coupon.

Peelies: These coupons are placed right on products like a peel away sticker. If you notice a peelie on a product you are buying, make sure you peel off the coupon because they can be used immediately on your purchase. These are normally a mfg. coupon.

Hangtags: These coupons are usually on found drinks, jellies, oils, syrups, laundry soaps and anything else that has a “neck” to hang the coupon tag on. Thus the name Hangtags because they “hang” off the product.

eCoupons: These are digital coupons that you will find online. You will pick the coupons that you want to use and then download them onto your shopper loyalty cards. There are many stores that offer eCoupons such as Kroger and Shoprite and even coupons.com has a digital coupons page. These coupons are usually considered a mfg. coupon and cannot be stacked.

Internet Printable: These coupons are found on the Internet from from coupon sites like Coupons.com, SmartSource and RedPlum. Some will be mfg. coupons and some will be store coupons. You are usually allowed to print 2 of each coupon during the month and companies will reset the coupons at the beginning of each month. Tip- Change the zip code for more options!

Tearpads: These are exactly what they sound like and can be found in many stores. They are the pads that are found by the products, sometimes on displays, in the front of stores, by the pharmacy, really just about anywhere in the store and you simply “tear” off a coupon that can be used immediately on your purchase of that product.

A Great Fundraiser

This month, once again we have all watched or suffered through a new round of tornadoes sweeping through the nation. In fact, one of our dear friends lost her house and her entire neighborhood this week in Harrison, TN. Many of you have voiced the question on all our hearts:

How can I help?

Well, this morning, we are bringing you one simple and powerful way to immediately reach out and help those who are trying to rebuild once again… Purchase a subscription to All You Magazine. For every subscription sold through this special fundraising link$6 will be donated to tornado relief efforts.

Last year, right after the April 2011 tornadoes hit, we began this fundraiser, naming it Click4Hope. We invited other bloggers to join us – and together we all raised a whopping $28,000! (See the news coverage HERE) This past December we donated $7,000 each to the following: Cleveland, TN., Ringgold, GA., Moody AL., and Joplin, MO

What is All You Magazine?
All You Magazine is the ultimate couponer’s magazine. Each issue is stocked with up to $100 in coupons, money-saving tips, and frugal recipes, style tips and activities. Normally you would pay $2.49 an issue at Walmart – which is worth every penny. (April’s issue has over $80 in coupons!)

Couponing 101

Well you have to know the language so you know what people are talking about..

Coupon Lingo

$$/$$ – This means $ off when you spend $ amount. Example: $5/$30 is $5 off your purchase when you spend $30. (Check to see if the amount has to be before or after coupons to apply.)

$/# – This means that you get $ off for every # you buy. Example: $5/2 would mean that you get $5 off every 2 that you buy.

B1G1 = Buy One Get One Free (B1G2 is Buy One Get Two Free etc.)

Blinkie = A coupon that prints out at a machine in the store. They are located by the product associated with that particular coupon.

BOGO = Buy One Get One Free

Catalina = Also referred to as CAT. A coupon that prints out at the register that is either $$ off your next purchase or $$ off a certain product. You typically have to use them at the store they printed, but some stores will take “competitor’s” coupons. Note: These are sometimes delayed in printing so wait a minute before walking away from the register. If you think you were supposed to get one and didn’t, talk to the cashier/manager and explain. Couponing for the Newbies

I am going to start a weekly session that will help you learn how to coupon.

Week One is the Basics

First and foremost

Throw out everything you have been doing. Instead of shopping for the things you need now, you are really shopping in advance. These are the steps I used to get started.

Get some Coupons. I am not saying you have to get a lot, just start with 2. You can work your way up. Get some from family or friends. Some people even go to a recycle center. If you want the paper delivered for cheap email me..

Here are the top places to find coupons:

  • Sunday Newspapers – These are the biggest sources of coupons. To find additional copies, check recycling bins or ask your family/friends if they are using theirs. There are anywhere from none to three inserts per paper.
  • Free Samples – Signing up for free samples is a great way to get some higher dollar coupons. I’d advise creating a separate email address for “freebies.”
  • In-Store – You can often find coupons called “blinkies,” which are the little machines that spit out coupons by the products they are for. There are also “tear-pads,”as well. You can sometimes even find “peelies” right on the products themselves.
  • Printable Sites – Two of the big printable sites are Coupons.comand Smartsource.com and Red Plum These coupons rotate week after week and sometimes even have maximum printings that when the limit is reached, they are pulled off the site. So if you see one you think you might need, you should print it. (You can usually print two per computer.)
  • Blogs – Blogs are a great place to find coupons. I stumble upon several at my fellow blogger’s sites throughout the week. I compile them throughout the week and post them on Mondays. Look at my list of Favorite Blogs.
  • Search Engines – If you are looking for a specific coupon, just type the brand name followed by the word coupon and you might be able to find one that way.
  •  Join Groups/Surveys – There are some groups you can sign-up for that will offer/mail you coupons from time-to-time. Some are:
    Vocal Point  Upromise Ebates
  • Join stores Mailing list – Go to Publix and Winn Dixie they have Baby clubs and various coupons. You may not have babies, but a lot of them will give you the $/$$ that are important.
  • Manufacturers Websites – More and more manufacturers are hosting coupons on their own sites now. If you use a lot of a particular item/brand, check their website to see if they offer coupons. If they don’t, email/mail them and request some. I’ve gotten a few this way. Go here for the companies sites!
  • Magazines – By far, the magazine with the most coupons lately has been All You magazine, which you can only get by subscription or at Wal-Mart. The price of the magazine is well worth the coupons inside. Make sure you check your magazines to see if there are some inside.
  • eBay – There are several coupon clippers that sell their services and send you coupons for a fee. Just type in the product and the word coupon to see what’s available. Be sure to go through Ebates to earn 3% more.
  • Forums – There are several great forums out there to check into. The top ones I’ve found are Iheartpublix.com, HotCouponWorld.com and AFullCup.com. You have to register at each of them, but it’s free.
  • Store Websites – Make sure you sign-up for your local store’s loyalty programs and register at their websites so you can get emailed coupons. You can also sign-up to have them pre-loaded at Shortcuts or Cellfire and Now Saving Star
  • Coupon clipping services – I recommend Coupon By De De She is cheap and fast, my two favorite things.

The first order of business is to get coupons. Next week we will go over Organization.
